Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Taking inventory of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a building or portfolio is likely going to become increasingly important over the coming years. Navigreen Engineering prepares detailed Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Reports for clients which focus on a comprehensive analysis of emissions sources.

These reports can be used for overall benchmarking, contract compliance, state and local regulation compliance, corporate policy, marketing, and investor relations, among other purposes. Additionally, these reports can help drive emissions reductions by helping clients visualize their standing against their own GHG and sustainability targets. An annually recurring GHG emissions inventory and benchmarking can show emission reductions year-over-year, or be used to compare buildings within a portfolio and against industry competitors.

When direct emissions reduction are not feasible due to process-oriented limitations or reduction efforts already implemented, Navigreen can recommend a combination of carbon credits, offsets and renewable energy credits (RECs) purchasing to lower clients’ net GHG emissions and further drive down their overall carbon footprint.

At the start of the GHG inventory, clients can either have their own team collect energy usage data, or Navigreen can complete the direct data collection ourselves, reducing the burden on our clients’ resources. Our team of engineers and energy/sustainability professionals uses a variety of reporting and GHG emissions tools to meet GHG Protocols developed by the US EPA and other NGOs.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions are generally divided into 3 categories:

  • Category 1 covers direct GHG emissions from owned or controlled sources, including vehicles, equipment, and stationary generation sources.

  • Category 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of electricity, steam, or heating and cooling services that are purchased by the client from external sources.

  • Category 3 includes all remaining indirect emissions that occur within a company’s value chain and are related to the company’s business and activities, such as travel, employee commuting, food service, and others.

After the inventory is completed, Navigreen can conduct ongoing energy audits for our clients to identify cost effective ways to reduce GHG emissions and drive sustainability through other credit and offset purchasing options.
